DC Comics released it's latest venture into the "new 52" series last week with Constantine #1. I went into this comic blind, because I didn't know the story of the character before reading this comic. Honestly after reading the comic I still didn't know the background of John Constantine. You get little hints throughout the book, but you never get inside his head like you would want in a first edition. Renato Guedes' artwork is really good throughout the book. The "old school" feel to the illustrations is something I really enjoy.
John Constantine got his start in Hellblazer as a cynical anti-hero you could say. As a detective in the occult he learned about magic and how to effectively use it. He will often use and manipulate people to obtain what he seeks and to invoke revenge. I really enjoy characters who aren't so black and white as to what side of the moral line they are on. It makes you get into the story and make up your own mind. The story itself is well written by Ray Fawkes and Jeff Lemire. They set the groundwork for the continuation of the story. Without spoiling any of the story it does take a twist you don't see coming and really gives you some insight as to the man Constantine is.
I did have to do some research as to where this character began and some of his background. More seasoned fans might be able to pick up from his Hellblazer days. For those of you who can I envy you. I really recommend picking this up and giving it a try. I do also advice giving it a few issues, because I am sure it will take that long to set the hook with readers.
