The shroud of Abrams' secrecy, good or bad?

I realize that a blogger enjoying the fact that J.J Abrams likes to keep details of his work to himself until that work is released seems a bit conflicting, but he calls back to a time when information wasn't a click away from anywhere. For someone that has said he wants to capture the feel of the original trilogy, it may play in everyone's favor.  Regardless, here are some recent comments he made on the subject to the Telegraph.

Coming out of the announcement that J.J. Abrams had been brought on to direct Episode VII, home of the first things I remember thinking about was how secretive most of his past projects have been. From Super 8 to Star Trek, Abrams is a director that loves the election element of surprise in his work.  However, in this "always on" and "instant access" world we live in, how much mystery can you leave?

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Abrams spoke a little about this and where his favoring the element of surprise stems from. From when the was very young, he has had a fondness for magic.

"Magic is something that's informed what I've done" Abrams said. "The magic that works for me, is the magic that feels completely grounded and real and tangible, and the movies and television are extensions of that"

He then goes on to explain the lengths the team at Bad Robot, Abrams production company, is used to going to preserve some of that magic when it comes to the new Star Wars film.

Are you kidding me? My god. My office… I’m working on the Star Wars script today and the people in my office have covered up all my windows with black paper. I guess they wanted to make sure no one could see what I was doing.”

Abrams then goes on to concede that Star Wars is unlike anything he's worked on up to this point in his career.

" 'Star Wars' is in every way a different animal," Abrams said, "It's always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I've been used to, so I'm sure there'll be some sort of compromise. But it feels to me like there's a purity in not knowing every little thing."
