McDonald's Swings Through Gender Stereotypes with New Spiderman Happy Meal Toys

In the wake of the Star Wars Episode VII cast being announced yesterday with the addition on only one new female cast member, I found this fitting. McDonald’s has announced that for the first time, fangirls around the world will not have to ask for a “boy’s” toy when they order a Happy Meal. In their announcement for “The Amazing Spiderman 2” tie-in, both the Boy’s and girl’s toys will feature our favorite arachnid superhero.

As a father of a fangirl who has had to ask for “Boy’s Toy’s” every time she wanted a Star Wars toy, this is pretty big even if they don’t realize it. Toy stores everywhere split their toys and label the aisles by gender, giving no thought to the girl who wants a lightsaber or the little boy who likes My Little Ponies. It’s a small observation to you or me, but to a child, it’s as though someone is telling them that what they are into shouldn’t be for them. Check out the Spiderman toys below and then take your little Spiderman or Spiderwoman to get a Happy Meal.

Good on you McDonalds
